The Basics

What you can expect from our classes

Each class will consist of:

  • Warm up (exercise)
  • Stretching
  • Kicking and punching techniques
  • Drilling
  • Syllabus work
  • Contact sparring (for licensed students)


As in all Martial Arts students are required to pay respects both to their instructors and each other. The manner in which this is done:

  • Bowing on entering and leaving the training room
  • Bowing to instructors and beginning and end of the class
  • Bowing to your opponent/training partner
  • Not talking during instruction
  • Showing respect to all other members of the class

Medical Conditions

It is your responsibility as a student to make your instructors aware of any medical condition or injury which could adversely affect your or another person's well-being. If in doubt please consult your doctor.


Martial arts training is a potentially dangerous activity. Before beginning any martial arts training or exercise program, you should first consult your physician. Bumps, bruises, scrapes, scratches and soreness are commonplace, and most students will encounter this sort of minor injury from time to time in their training. More serious injuries are possible, including sprains, strains, twists, cramps, and injuries of similar magnitude, and students can expect to encounter these injuries infrequently. The possibility of more serious injury exists, including fractured bones, broken bones, and torn ligaments, though not all students encounter such serious injuries. As with any physical activity, there also exists the remote possibility of crippling or death. Attending any training or club activity with Southern Martial Arts is on the proviso that you understand and accept these risks.
